TODAY I LEARNED

Lockwire is your friend.

On a regular basis, check that the shackles on your sails have decent lockwire or zip ties to ensure they can not come undone at the worst possible moment.

Zip ties will not last forever, as the sun will slowly (quite rapidly in some cases) destroy them, but they do come with the added advantage of not scratching or tearing your sails on furlers etc.

The more frequent inspection required could be thought of as a bonus.

Far better to find a problem before its a problem and you can stop a trip up the mast in the dark in 2M swells.
